Re: fruit tree's
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 10:44 AMI have a miniature persimmon tree with tiny fruits in scale for bonsai. I have seen crabapple, hawthorne, and quince bonsai. I find the out-of-scale quince to look odd, but it was on a very old specimen which had sturdy branches to hold up a few fruits for the aesthetic, not for harvest. I would think that the scale would be the most important thing to keep correct, then you would have no worries about breaking branches... -

Wed, January 16, 2008 - 11:24 AMwell I was given a special japanese dwarf bonsai with tiny leaves and fruit - not like any I have ever seen for fruit production- by a local japanese nursery friend (who died a few years ago) - it has been one of my trickier bonsai as it has many exposed root structures, and does not bear much fruit if any some years. all my bonsai are on irrigation, and all are outside of course.
not sure what tips you are looking for~ each bonsai seems to have its own requirements based on so many factors...pot, soil, sun, wind, water, species, exposure, etc etc etc.... -

Wed, February 20, 2008 - 5:09 PMI'm a little bit late to the party but here is an article with tips (mostly propagating) princess persimmon bonsai. This variety seems to be the best way to go if you are going to try for a small or medium sized bonsai. You may need to search around the local nurseries to find the right species Diospyros rhombifolia if you are starting from nursery material. Just so you know, my understanding is it takes several years before they fruit if you are making them from seeds, etc.
I saw many psudocydonia quince bonsai in Japan at an exhibition with the large quinces at the ends of bare branches and it's really an amazing site. The arrangement of the quince with no leaves in winter with the fruit arranged just right is an art in itself. I just got a crabapple that is about to bloom. It's not my main thing but I like having 1 or 2 fruiting bonsai around.
