new bonsai owner!

Hello!

I was really into bonsai about 10 years ago when I was in high school and haven't had the time to get back into it. Well, as a housewarming gift my mother just gave me a Satsuki Azalea bonsai! I'm very excited but nevous also as this is quite different from the creeping junipers that I tended in high school.

Any advice? Since it's winter right now I'm thinking that I should be keeping this in the sunny window in the garage so that it doesn't get to warm and keep it watered. It's too windy to put this outside and honestly, I don't have anything to put it on outside yet - at least not where it'd be protected and get sun. It has no shape to speak of, really it's just a bush in an bonsai pot right now, but I have high hopes for training this into something asymmetrical in time.

Thanks and I'm glad that I found this group.

Either this is a really slow moving group, or no one has experience with this type of bonsai....

Just an update, for those who might read this: It has weathered the summer very well, bloomed quite nicely and is responding to my gentle persuasion to shape it very well. I have since also gotten a creeping juniper like I had when I was younger and that has also been doing very well, though it lives inside while the Satsuki lives on the deck with my impatience and marigolds.

It is slow, yes. But I am encouraged to see the group is still getting some activity.

Living in California, I don't have much advice for you about "wintering" trees unfortunately. I will say that Satsukis are very different from Junipers, and I find them to be more temperamental. You can winter trees in a garage with a window, or in your yard covered with poly material, similar to what they use on greenhouses. A greenhouse that doesn't get too warm would probably very nice, but you don't want it to get too warm or you might interfere with the plant's normal phases.

I will say from my experience that soil and drainage are very important for Satsukis, and you don't want too much sun in the summer. My first Satsuki died during a rare wet winter in CA due to root rot. I repotted that spring in pure Kanuma soil which is its preferred soil but it was too late I had already lost more than half the roots.

Update - my roommate struck and my bonsai died. Longer version: it's not pretty and unfortunately my bonsai suffered for it.

However, I am starting over with a juniper (which I am more accustom to) this summer and hope to have more about that soon!

good luck with the next one..

(and yes, this is a very slow group! )

              I do!

But now I have a new creeping juniper bonsai courtesy of the fine shop at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Yay! It's already heading in an asymmetrical form direction, so I think I'll just let it stay that way. It's rather pretty and quite a good size too. I need to pot it soon, but I'm letting it adjust to it's new environment first so it's not too shocked.

This one is going to be all me, and yes - I'm thinking about bringing it on my camping event if I don't think it'll make it two weeks on it's own!
